On my Matchless G3LS this is stamped into the top of the front down-tube. I initially, like many other people, mistook it to be the frame number. Actually it is just a casting or part number identifier from when the frame was made and hence is identical on many Matchless and AJS bikes, so beware! This is not your frame number! The number shown in the picture is stamped onto the frame of my Matchless G3LS on the front down-tube, just in front of tank next to the top engine bracket.

Is it right for the DVLA to shred the records of speeding and drunken drivers in the name of human rights? Tell us below in reader comments The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency destroys details of convictions of speeding drivers after just four years.
And records of drunk driving are removed from their database after 11 years. The destruction – ordered by officials at the Department of Transport – is the lat-est in a string of bizarre decisions by courts and bureaucrats inspired by human rights rules. The dumping of bad driving records came to light follow-ing the trial of boxer Prince Naseem Hamed, who was jailed for 15 months for dangerous driving last week. The trial judge declared it was ‘astonishing’ that the DVLA failed to help prose-cuting lawyers by providing full information on his past poor driving record.
The Agency said yesterday that it destroys evidence of driving convictions after they are no longer recorded on an individual’s driving licence, and no longer count towards driving bans through the ‘totting up’ procedure. The decision was con-demned by Tories as ‘ludi-crous’ and ‘negligent’. It has been made despite the DVLA’s policy of freely selling information about dri-vers, including home addresses, to anyone who it believes has a legitimate claim.
Shadow Home Secretary David Davis accused minis-ters of incompetence for allowing the destruction of the records. Incompetent “Either ministers have given the wrong leadership in this are incompetent, or they have allowed this to happen without their knowledge in which case they are negligent.

The service also runs to helping with the form filling too.
When registering a vehicle, there are a number of requirements from the DVLA when it comes to confirming the age of a vehicle. If you have old documentation supporting the vehicle registration, such as a buff log book or old tax discs, then the application is made via a V form. For this you will need a club on the V register to authenticate what you have. To qualify, cars do need to be relatively complete and in one piece. As supporting evidence of age, in the first instance a foreign title or registration document is preferred by the DVLA.
After that, a letter from the manufacturer is seen as the next best thing. I brought the bike unregistered but with the following documentation: Everything checked out OK and they said if there where no problems with the paperwork I could return in two days and pick up the V5 document. The next day they phoned to say that the vehicle would need to be inspected. I didn’t argue and made another appointment for the inspection. They offered me a date the next week but I couldn’t get the time off work so had to leave it a couple of weeks.
I turned up on the day of the inspection and the inspecting officer told me that the reason for the inspection was due to the USA Title document having a different VIN number that the rest of the documentation. Unfortunately I had missed this. I could have told them this if they had asked.

DVLA take longer than my insurance company will allow Just a story of warning really To drive it to the MoT station you need Insurance UK insurance companies apparently all insist that you provide them with a V5c registration document within 30days of taking out your policy. If you don’t provide them with the V5 within 30 days they will cancel your policy, taking any cancellation fees etc. I tried explaining this to the insurance companies, but they are not interested.
If I’d have done my homework and known all this before insuring my car, I would have towed it to the MoT and waited until I had the V5 in my hand before insuring it. Another piece of advice
